My day on a plate: Dianne Bibby

Dianne Bibby – along with her awe-inspiring food blog, Bibby’s Kitchen – is a household name to South African foodies. Her drool-worthy dishes pop up on our Instagram feeds and make their way to our kitchens. We got a glimpse into what Dianne’s meals are like behind the scenes.

“Every day starts with a purple Nespresso,” she says, “hot and strong. Most likely with a rusk. Current favourite: the coconut and sunflower seed one from my new e-book.”

Breakfast

“It might be old, but I love avo toast with rye and plenty of za’tar. If you need a nifty Middle Eastern spice to liven up poached eggs, salads or roast chicken, this is it. For all the in-between days, homemade granola or Greek yoghurt with honey and walnuts.”

Snack

“Is coffee a snack?”

Lunch

“In the first week of lockdown, we moved an old vintage table into the driveway under the sprawling oak. We eat here most days. It feels a bit like eating out. Lunch is often what I’ve been shooting on the day, or a hearty vegetable soup. Soups are like muffins – they’re best with crunchy toppings. Dukkah or Mexican seed sprinkles are a favourite. Since restaurants have reopened, the girls and I often nip by Olives and Plates for their fabulous harvest table lunch.”

Dinner

“Dinner is always around the kitchen table with my husband and the girls. We all love Middle Eastern food so it’ll most likely be harissa chicken with roast vegetables and hummus. For wintery comfort, nothing beats a warming butter chicken curry.”

“Dessert is more a weekend thing, although lockdown has blurred the lines somewhat. Nowadays we’re doing dessert like it’s weekend every day! There’s always a tester cake begging for company – usually a rich chocolatey affair or maybe another banana bread? Yes, banana bread is still holding its ground. If you’re looking for a little something sweet after supper, as we do, fudgy date balls or sea-salt chocolate will do the job.”
