Move over Americano and say hello to the beetroot latte

We love a coffee trend just as much as the next person but the latest in coffee culture has us thinking – should vegetables be served as a latte?

Bootlegger Coffee Company in Cape Town certainly thinks so because they’ve come out with a range of ‘functional flat whites’ that brings the essence of superfoods right into your coffee cup. Functional foods began trending on the internet in 2016 with the global rise and movement towards a healthier, plant-based way of eating. They tend to have a potentially positive effect on one’s health beyond basic nutrition and usually contain high levels of phytochemicals which are found to boost health. So think of foods like blueberries, fatty fish, leafy greens and walnuts. You’ll find beetroot, turmeric and matcha lattes on the menu.

“We are always on the lookout for new, healthy products. The turmeric and beetroot are sourced from a local supplier, Superlatte and the matcha we are importing directly from Japan at R5000 per kg”, says Cara Attewell, Marketing Manager for Bootlegger Coffee Company. “Matcha is Japanese powdered green tea, this means there is over double the amount of antioxidants than a normal green tea, served in a flat white style.”

Red Velvet (the beetroot one) is made of rich beetroot, organic cocoa and ginger for blood and heart health benefits.

Golden Milk (the turmeric one) is made of anti-inflammatory organic turmeric, fragrant spices and a dash of coconut oil.
