MasterChef: The mystery box!

MasterChef is starting to heat up as the 2nd season’s first ‘Mystery box challenge’ unfolded last night.

The challenge: 7 ingredients for a recipe to be made in 45 minutes.  And, it was on!

Ingredients included chicken, capers, fresh asparagus spears, ricotta cheese, verjuice, toasted breadcrumbs and bone marrow.

As the cameras moved around the kitchen, it’s clear the 15 top contestants are finding their MasterChef groove and are practicing skills in the MasterChef house. Sanet bragged that Herman plates all his meals, even eggs on toast (Herman, you can come and plate anything you want for us, anytime).

Karen rocked her mystery ingredients like a seasoned pro: ‘Happiness, happiness, happiness! I love cooking with bone marrow!’

Leandri, a fast favourite, was far from stoked. ‘Strike 1, I’ve never cooked bone marrow,’ she said. ‘Strike 2, I see ricotta. I’m not a cheese eater and I don’t cook with cheese.’  Cue horrified expression on the judges faces when she told them she thinks cheese tastes like smelly feet.

Mary, Amanda, Sanet, Tumi and Seline’s dishes did not impress Benny, Pete and Andrew and dreams were crushed as these 5 were sent straight into the Elimination Round.

‘You need to keep your wits about you,” Pete warned, “because we’re going straight into the ‘Elimination Round’.’

Heavy days.
