MasterChef SA: Double elimination!

Shock! Horror!

Not 1 but 2 contestants were sent home after a difficult elimination round.

Herman, the 34-year-old electrician from Witbank, and 30-year-old Mary, a professional dancer from Johannesburg.

Chef David Higgs from the acclaimed Five Hundred At The Saxon restaurant at Johannesburg’s Saxon Hotel.

“We have a litchi sorbet,” Chef Higgs explained, “we have a liquorice macaroon. We have a litchi panna cotta. And then just a little swipe of liquorice on the plate and a black bread crumble.”

Chef David Higgs explained that it was all about timing – they had to be sure to get each element ready to be presented at once. Also, that the recipes were to be followed meticulously, or they would not work.

Time: 2 hours

The pressure was on from the first second as all 5 contestants scrambled to measure out their ingredients.

The macaroons proved to be the hardest with the pannacotta a close second. Poor Ozzy had to do his pannacotta a second time as the first one did not set. Luckily he had a little time!

Herman lost the plot all together and everything went wrong for him, his macaroons, pannacotta and crumble just bombed. Mary’s ganache didn’t happen at all as she forgot to blend it and her macaroon flopped as well.

Amanda, Khumo and Ozzy slipped past and made it through with a sad farewell to Herman and Mary.
