February Vin-atics Tasting Notes

Welmoed Sauvignon Blanc 2010  RRP R32.99
Fresh and fruity little number made from grapes night-harvested to retain lively acidity and delicate aromatics. Lots of tropical fruits with an added richness from two months lees contact. An excellent, good value wine.

Dinner party drop-in line – lees ageing is sooo the way to go for Sauvignon Blanc!

Aletta’s getting creative this month and has avoided the normal Sauvignon/goats’ cheese match in favour of something a little more earthy. She reckons these Cheesy Bean Burgers with lentils and chickpeas will marry perfectly with the aromatic fruit.

Welmoed Chenin Blanc 2010  RRP R26.99
An all-day, every-day drink, perfect either with or without food. Lovely, concentrated fruit salad flavours with citrus fruit and apples and a crisp acidic bite at the finish. The ultimate easy-drinking quaffer.

Dinner party drop-in line – did you know that 4 out of the top 6 wines in the recent Chenin Blanc Challenge were unwooded? Definitely a popular style!

‘I make a killer Caponata’ announced Aletta proudly – and you can’t argue with that can you?! Lots of lovely Mediterranean flavours paired with a fresh fruit salad wine makes for a light and tasty starter – we hope!

Welmoed Chardonnay 2010  RRP R32.99
This is a blend of three different batches – one tank fermented on its own, one tank fermented with some staves and some in oak barrels. The result is a delicately-oaky wine with plenty of primary yellow stone fruit and a creamy, fresh finish.

Dinner party drop-in line –  Blending the different wood and non-wood treatments into one wine gives far much more balance don’t you think?

I don’t think Pete Goffe-Wood has much faith in our braaiing abilities as he assured us this was a really easy recipe! Little does he know that we plan on making him braai these yummy-sounding Mexican Spiced Chicken tacos with Roast Sweetcorn salsa whilst we just drink the creamy Chardonnay!

Welmoed Rosé 2010  RRP R32.99

Made from Pinotage and Shiraz grapes coming from young vines, this is a lively, juicy wine with plenty of fresh strawberries and cranberries both on the nose and the palate. Zesty acidity and dry finish.

Dinner party drop-in line –  2011 is the year for declaring that Real Men Drink Pink!

Jan says he’s been mulling over ideas for Curried Sosaties for some time now and now seemed the perfect time to try them out! The curry is quite mild so I reckon the sweet fruit of this rose should complement it perfectly without overpowering it.

Welmoed Merlot 2009  RRP R34.99
Soft, ripe and juicy Merlot showing all the flavours you could wish from this variety. Hints of mint, soft, accessible tannins and an easy-drinking attitude which means one bottle is never enough!

Dinner party drop-in line – I think South Africa can make good Merlot, you just have to pick your site and your winemaker with care!

You can’t beat a bit of Merlot with your meat can you? And these Ribs with Sticky Chilli Marinade should be a great match for the herbs and sweet black fruit notes in this soft and gulpable Merlot.

Welmoed Shiraz 2009  RRP R34.99

A real crowd-pleaser of a wine, it’s impossible to find anyone who wouldn’t enjoy a glass or two of this! Ripe black fruit, hints of spice and a soft, juicy finish.

Dinner party drop-in line –  Shiraz originates from Persia, now known as Iran, so technically I suppose this could be termed Islamic wine!

Big debate about this food match but I think Aletta’s got it right! The earthy flavours of this divine Beetroot salad with Herb Butter will be robust enough to handle any amount of spice and fruit and it’s great to see something that goes with Shiraz that isn’t meat!
