Easter eating

Tomorrow is Good Friday and the beginning of Easter long weekend. I hope you have your fridge and pantry fully stocked with all that’s needed for what is going to be a food-filled weekend of chocolate, Easter eggs and all things totally scrumptious!

I had a lengthy discussion with my team yesterday about pickled fish. A dish filled with aromatic masala spices and pungent vinegar, traditionally eaten on Good Friday. It’s a custom passed down through generations in the Cape, with families loyally buying their seafood for “kerrievis” from the same fishmonger year after year. Before the existence of refrigeration, pickling was a popular method of preserving food. Prices of fish during the Easter period also sky rocket to three times the normal price. Yikes! Here’s a recipe for pickled fish that your family will love, or give this version of pickled fish tacos a bash for something a bit more modern.

If you’re not a pickled fish eater (as we discovered some families aren’t familiar with the tradition), then hop over to these chocolate Easter nest cupcakes. Almost too cute to eat! Chocolate lovers – follow me right this way to our chocolate section for some more drool-worthy recipes. If you find yourself losing all control this weekend, you might want to read these tips on how to avoid chocolate temptation during Easter. I always try to remember the acronym MIK – moderation is key!

Not a fan of the sweet? Make a batch of Hot cross buns – here are 7 recipes including ones that are gluten-free, Banting and simply downright delicious. Toast them and top with cheese, a slice of bacon maybe? Or a modest smear of melty butter. Serve with a warm cup of tea coffee for a satisfying treat. After something more hearty to start the day? Check out these 15 recipes to take your Easter brunch from boring to brilliant.

Now – about the wine situation. Cathy has kindly put together an Easter wine box just for you! It’s filled with bubbles, a phenomenal Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and more. Pair them with a meal or simply enjoy on their own.

For those who are travelling during the weekend, we highly suggest that you have a look at our holiday eating out guide for great places to stop and refuel along your journey.
