Cathy Marston’s winter red wine round-up

It’s definitely getting chilly here in Cape Town at the moment – I can tell this by the fact that the cat is currently sitting on top of my head and refusing to go outside! What she needs is a good glass of red wine and I am having a wonderful time indulging in those this week.

There’s been lots of talk in the news about how much we drink and how bad it is for us – check out this article from the World Health Organisation. And on top of all that, the magic ingredient in red wine that is supposed to keep everyone looking youthful – resveratrol – has apparently been over-rated and doesn’t do all that it claims. Terrible news for wine drinkers – but frankly, I don’t really care.

Everything in moderation is ALWAYS going to be okay in my opinion, so even if I am not preserving the dashing good looks of my youth (not that I ever had that many anyway) by drinking red wine, I’m sure a glass or two a night is doing my stress levels no end of good. If you’d care to join me, I’ve been busy tasting up a storm of reds recently as you can see on the Food24 drinks section.

For all those Cabernet-lovers (my favourite black grape) there are some suggestions of some very tasty examples here, but if you’re fed up with Cabernet and want to have a little walk on the wild side of wine, then I’ve found 5 more unusual varieties for you here. Well worth a try, just to see what’s new and upcoming.

Winter always seems a good time to save a few pennies as well, so I’ve rounded up some sub-R60 bargains from Pick n Pay which I can highly recommend. Try them with some of these delicious casserole and stew recipes – a glass of wine in the pot and the rest of the bottle in me is the ratio I always work on!!

And of course, winter is also a great time for staying indoors and learning more about wine as well. I’m running all over the country teaching WSET wine courses at the moment so if you want to learn more about red wine in all its beautiful forms (and of course about white wine too) then drop me a line.

Drinking wine – the best way to keep warm this winter!!
