5 tasty soup toppings that will add another dimension to your meal

How does a meaty Thai chicken curry soup sound? Or a healthy broccoli version? We can’t leave out the classic butternut soup that’s almost become a South African icon. Whatever you choose to cook on a cold and chilly night, we know it will be good, but it could be better! How? By finishing it off with some a little extra. You won’t be sorry.

We have five toppings that complete a bowl of homemade soup – enhancing the presentation to (almost) restaurant level!

1. Parmesan crisps

Create little mounds of grated Parmesan cheese on a lined baking sheet. Bake at 200° C for 4-6 minutes, or until golden brown. Leave on the baking sheet until cooled and crisp. They can break easily so handle them gently.

2. Toasted pumpkin seeds

A simple way to add texture to your soup. Who doesn’t love a bit of crunch? Simply sprinkle on your soup before you’re ready to eat.

3. Tortilla chips

Another delightful way to add crunch to a mouthful of hot soup. Break them up into smaller pieces or just leave them whole for a more rustic look.

4. Salsa verde

This classic fresh herb sauce adds pizzazz to whatever you put it on. A great way to brighten any dull soup with flair. It might be a bit more time consuming to prepare but the extra work will be worth it! Try this recipe.

5. Caramelised onions

Add a hint of onion-y sweetness to your soup. The great thing is that you can make the caramelised onions in advance and keep them in the fridge for up to a week.
