5 awesome healthy places to eat or drink in Joburg

Bliss Juicery:
Colony Centre, Ground Floor, 325 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall
Tel: 073 131 4006

Finally! A cold-pressed juice shop in Joburg. If you’re still feeling sluggish from last year and want to give up food for a bit – I hear you – but it’s a bad idea. Unless you’re planning to replace it with nutrient-dense juice, that is.

Bliss Juicery sells detox packs that make you wonder why you even have teeth in the first place. But if you’re not ready to completely give up chewing, just pop in and grab a bright and colourful juice, a coconut water or a naturally flavoured almond milk from the fridge.

Free Food:
Shop 5B, Reithmere, Corner of Delta Street and Corlett Drive, Birnam
Tel: 082 406 4699

The food that comes out of this strictly vegan kitchen is free from all things: meat, dairy, gluten, preservatives and sugar so you know whatever you eat here will nourish and nurture your body.

Even the cakes are healthy. If that’s not enough to get you through the door, I don’t know what is. Try the chickpea burger with sweet potato wedges and whatever you do, don’t leave without grabbing some of the choc-ginger bliss balls that live next to the till.

Nu:
Waterfall Corner Mall, Corner of Maxwell & Woodmead Drives, Woodmead
Tel: 010 5968940

Three words: healthy blueberry pancakes. This Cape Town-born restaurant is not one of those pseudo good-for-you quick food joints. No, Nu is the real deal.

Pancakes aren’t the only things on the menu but they’re definitely what you should eat the first time you go. Plus, the portion size leaves just enough space for one of the delicious juices or smoothies on offer. Look out for The Nutter smoothie and the Fresh-Start juice.

Voodoo Lily Café:
64 St. Andrews Street, Corner Wrenrose Avenue, Birdhaven
Tel: 087 550 4022

With a Banting-friendly menu, Voodoo Lily Café is a win for those going the low-carb route.

If not, go there anyway – the restaurant serves organic and sustainable produce whenever possible, which is great if you’re trying to eat more consciously as well as improve your overall health. Think delicious, spicy shakshouka, deconstructed free-range chicken wraps and bunless burgers. Yum.

Life Grand Café:
Hyde Park Corner, Corner Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nicol Road
Tel: 011 325 5371

Life Grand Café’s big draw card is their make-your-own salad bar. You get to build a base from lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers and add four toppings. It’s always a tough choice when char-grilled carrots, olives, chickpeas, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes are on offer. Add a boiled egg or some chicken breast to that and it’s more than enough to keep you going until your next meal.
