The United States Department of Agriculture has released a Class 2 recall for two kinds of boerewors sold by Carnivore Meat Company in Tennessee. The establishment, owned by a South African born couple, offers various cuts of beef, pork, poultry, dried meats as well as South African grocery products.
According to Food Safety News, the boerie blunder was exposed on Tuesday 12 March 2019, after the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered that the boerewors contained soy (an allergen) which had not been declared on the packaging, and thus failed the USDA’s inspection.
Carnivore Meat Company told Food24, “There were two customers whose labels were not updated correctly prior to the product being sent out. The allergen is a sub ingredient of another ingredient and the listing was missed in a label revision. We’ve been selling it for five years and this is the first time this has occurred.”
Although soy is one of the only 5 ingredients allowed in the famous South African sausage, the label still has to include all allergens according to USA laws.
Looks like folks in Tennessee will have to wait for the next shipment of correctly labelled boerewors before they can enjoy a good old South African braai.
