Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s favourite 4-ingredient Christmas dessert recipe

A new cookbook called Giving Back Childhood has wonderfully brought together favourite childhood recipes from South Africa’s leading figures in academics, conservation, music, sports, politics and more. From Abdullah Ibrahim’s Boeber (Cape Malay sweet milk drink) to rugby player Siya Kolisi’s Umphokoqo, these are nostalgic and traditional favourites.

We loved music icon Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s Gogo Special. She says of it: “When Gogo was happy, she would make this dessert, which we all loved, and it would feel like Christmas. It was the best taste ever! Now I make it for my own children, but it’s still known as Gogo Special.”

Proceeds from book sales go to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

INGREDIENTS:

Serves 6

1 packet Tennis Biscuits

1 packet fruit jelly (your choice of flavour)

1 x 400g can crushed pineapple

1 x 380g can evaporated milk

METHOD:

Roughly crush the biscuits and spread half of them over the base of a serving dish.

Make the jelly according to the packet instructions and leave to cool. Once cool, stir in the pineapple and evaporated milk, and then place in the fridge to set. Spoon the jelly and pineapple mixture over the biscuits in the dish. Spread the remaining biscuits over the top and return to the fridge until ready to serve.
