You say tomato

What if you bit into your toasted cheese and tomato sarmie and molten larva tomato pips DIDN’T scald your chin and scar you for life?

Now that dream can become a reality with the new “super” tomato that UK grocery chain Tesco
is stocking in their stores. The super tomato hails from Holland where over 100 varieties have been tried and tested.

The non-leak tomato is set to revolutionise sandwich making. How exciting.

Experts say that a normal salad tomato leaks 12% of its moisture into the bread within an hour of the sandwich being made – transforming a lunchtime treat to wet cardboard by the time your tummy is rumbling.

Tesco claims however that the new tomato loses just 3% of its moisture.

Foodies have welcomed the new salad ingredient, but were sceptical that it would have the taste of a proper, succulent tomato.

Technical stuff
Apparently the tomato has the same level of juice as standard, but the internal structure of the tomato is dense and fleshy, retaining the moisture, while the usual open structure loses the moisture quickly on cutting.

Interesting tomato facts: apparently 8% of a tomato’s weight is lost after slicing and 12% seeps into the bread an hour later, while, their non-leak version loses less than 1% of the moisture, with just 3% seeping into the bread 12 hours later.

The proof of the pudding will have to be in the tasting when the non-leaking tomatoes go on sale this week. They are priced at 99p (R12) for a punnet of four, compared with a standard pack, which costs 88p for six.

And how does this make any difference to us in South Africa? It doesn’t yet. But the non-leak tomato may be a big hit and we could eventually be growing our own here.

How about them tomatoes?
