Wine Spectator, one of the world’s leading authorities on wine, every year awards restaurants globally for their dedication to offering a remarkable and unforgettable food and wine experience. The Grand Award is the highest category of award allocated by Wine Spectator, and of the 7 first time winners in 2018 7 restaurants chosen 5 are in the US, 1 from Canada and 1 in South Africa.

Gauteng’s Restaurant Mosaic, as a Grand Award winner, now joins such wine list elite as Le Louis XV by multi Michelin star winner chef Alain Ducasse in Monte Carlo, Per Se by Thomas Keller and the American fine dining institution The French Laundry (an annual winner since 2007).

Every aspect of wine service is judged – from presentation of the menu, wine service, sommelier recommendations and most importantly, demonstrating harmony between the wine and food menus. Judging by international wine experts are carried out throughout the year, including meticulous on site inspections.

Wine director, Cobus Du Plessis and sommelier Moses Magwaza lead the wine team at Restaurant Mosaic, where the cellar houses 75 000 bottles and boasts an impressive list of almost 3000 of South Africa’s greatest wines.

The art nouveau Parisian interior of Restaurant Mosaic invokes a feeling of opulence, while the menu offers a near effortless meeting of French techniques with Eastern flavours, seen through the South African perspective. Guests can select either the Enthusiast (additional R395 – R525) or the Connoisseur wine pairings (additional R465 – R575), the latter which offers an exceptional wine and food pairing experience.

“People trust us because they know what lengths we go to when we make these pairings,” explains Magwaza. “ ..eating and drinking with us is always an adventure.”

The full list of winners will be announced on 2 July 2018.
