Who’s in the (Book) Club

I belong to 2 book clubs – Kevin says it’s because it’s a good excuse to get drunk
and eat chocolate twice a month. Which is clearly untrue as I never
need an excuse anyway and strongly believe that every day is a good day
for chocolate and wine.

Be that as it may, I was pondering
last night over a rather pleasant bottle of Longmarket Sauvignon Blanc
and some intellectual chat about books (ha, ha – kids, schools,
husbands, food, George Clooney, diets, Grey’s Anatomy – all the normal
stuff actually), about the kinds of wine that people bring to evenings
such as these.

I think there are a few basic types and would
be interested to know whether these are unique to my group of friends
or whether you have them in your Book Clubs too:

Woolworths Zesty White
– bought by the case-load on the weekly grocery visit to Cavendish
Woollies. A good-time girl who goes for quantity rather than quality.
Never reads anything beyond Marian Keyes.

Café Culture Pinotage
– her husband found it at WineX and now it’s the only red wine she
drinks. Brings it because she knows everyone will ooh and ah over it
and it goes well with chocolate. Dabbles with Stieg Larsson, but prefers Margaret Atwood.

Pongracz
– doesn’t get out much so likes to celebrate when she does. Happy to
drink it from a wine glass, thinks it counts as a low alcohol wine.
Party animal, lives on Twitter, loves Dan Brown and has a special Goth assistant at Exclusive Books who recommends things to her.

Springfield ‘Life From Stone’ Sauvignon Blanc
– has high expectations of everything in life, only buys the best and
annoyingly can afford to do so easily. Gets the caterers in when it’s
her turn to host Book Club. Quite demanding – definitely Haruki Murakami.

Laibach ‘The Ladybird’ Organic Red – saves the planet, has an organic veggie box delivered weekly, goes to meditation classes, smokes dope, reads ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ every six months.

Unlabelled something or other
– she got an email at work about this job lot left over after a fire in
a restaurant but the wine only got a little scorched and she thinks it’s Cabernet but it might be something else, she’s not sure really but she had some last night and it was okay by the second glass. Sarah Waters. Without a shadow of a doubt.

Carton of Liquifruit – permanently pregnant or breast-feeding. Really prefers to read non-fiction about ‘Parenting the ADHD Child’ or ‘Raising Great Boys to be Great Men’, but can also do Jodi Picoult if necessary because she is so sensitive to a woman’s point of view.

That
covers quite a few bases in my clubs – anyone got any other wines and
book club women they’d like to share with us all?? Drop us a mail
