The duo behind Food Glorious Food, Bev Hawthorne and Cullum Johnston, are firm believers that “food truck”and “junk food” do not have to go hand in hand. Quite the opposite in fact, as Bev explains ‘People are more focused on healthy eating than ever before,We always go the extra mile to make sure that every dish is made with the best available ingredients and that the end product is, well, glorious!’’

This month, Food Glorious Food is based on UCT Medical Campus, feeding the hordes of hardworking (and hungry!) students of Cape Town.

The queue quickly forms just after 12 noon – the students pour out of their lectures and head straight for Food Glorious Food. Bev welcomes some of the regulars by name. The food truck already has a very loyal following here on campus, and Bev handles their orders with a warm smile. Behind her, Cullum mans the grill, gleaming in stainless steel, as he puts his head down and energetically pumps out bacon and egg rolls, beef burgers with cheese, and toasted chicken sandwiches.

Student-fare was on the menu this week, but that certainly doesn’t mean cheap and nasty! The juicy chicken burger with cheese and bacon was delicious -hot, fresh and oh so tasty. We also tried the nachos bowl – corn chips, savoury mince, crisp salads and finished off with a dollop of sour cream and Cullum’s famous home made chilli sauce. We also appreciated the biodegradable packaging – no straws here!

Their compact, mobile kitchen is forever on the move – often at food festivals around Cape Town, and on the weekends feeding hungry guests at weddings and birthday celebrations.
The food truck format offers not only the flexibility of location, but also allows Bev and Cullum to tailor their menu to each destination. Bev beams as she says, ‘we love our mobile kitchen, It’s got everything we need to prepare almost any meal any customer might want.’

Food Glorious Food is currently located on UCT Medical Campus. They accept cash, snapscan, card and UCT meal vouchers as payments. Open Monday to Friday from 8am until 4pm.
Also available for events, festivals and private catering: find them on Facebook and Twitter.
