We can’t understand the hype – Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte is coming back and people are already going crazy for it

The popular pumpkin flavoured Starbucks drink was invented as an Autumn or “Fall” beverage menu item for the cooler season and since its first year on the menu, the latte has generated somewhat of a cult following with fans even joining Facebook groups in its honour – like this one called “Leaf Rakers Society”.

According to the Starbucks menu, the pumpkin spice latte (inspired by the flavours of pumpkin pie which is America’s quintessential Thanksgiving dessert), contains espresso, milk, pumpkin puree, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. The demand for the drink has increased dramatically since 2014 when it first appeared and the much anticipated announcement of its arrival this year has been a giant source of suspense for many PSL fans across the world.

Today.com reported that this year’s date will be 28 August 2018 instead of September when the drink usually hits stores. The drink is so popular it even has an official Twitter and Instagram account with over 130 000 followers combined.

Why is the drink so popular? Could it be that the pumpkin spice latte has associations with the start of the holiday season in the USA, and the beginning of Autumn – the time to bundle up in scarfs and coats and enjoy soul-soothing drinks? Whatever it is, we can’t quite get our heads around sipping a coffee with vegetable puree in it.
