WATERMELON – In season now

Bite into a watermelon and just feel the summer around you.

The huge dappled green skins of these taste monsters are piled high in the supermarkets and are a wonderful addition to any meal.

Watermelons are the fruit of a vine-like (scrambler and trailer) herb from southern Africa and are actually a type of berry that botanists refer to as a pepo.  They are largely known as a melon and are sweet in flavour and range from pink to yellow and orange in colour.

History

Watermelons are thought to have originated in southern Africa and there is evidence of their cultivation in the Nile Valley as far back as the 2nd millenium BC. They do not feature on the walls of the Egyptian tombs but numerous watermelon seeds were recovered from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen.

By the 10th Century AD they were being cultivated in China which are the biggest producers of the fruit today.

Japan has come up with a way to grow square watermelons, they put them in perspex boxes and they grow into the shape of the box.  Take a look here…

Watermelons are enjoyed the world over and their sweet pink flesh brings smiles to everyone in their summery season. They can be used in sweet or savoury dishes and are wonderful on their own, served as hand-held wedges. A delightful end to your meal that’s easy on the pocket too.
