Under the influence

What is better than cocktails on a Friday afternoon? Not much, and when your view is a floor to ceiling glass window of Table Mountain, it’s even better.

Where?
Vista bar at the One&Only is a chic and sophisticated spot to order art in a glass. They have a cocktail menu that boasts molecular mixology, and the taste and flavour combinations are simply out of this world.

These vessels of boozy nectar are designed to take you on a journey of the past, present and future of six key cocktails.

The outcome is deliciously funky and quite awesome.

Cath and I tasted at least ten of these beautiful potions, as they were served with a professional flourish by Sanchez the barman. One of a great team, he is a Ronaldo look-alike with a twinkle in his eye and a naughty grin to boot.

The cocktails
The ‘Bloody lekker’ is amazing with its biltong infused vodka. And the fresh and intensely coloured ‘Bloody veggie’ with beetroot juice, really smacked our mouths full of lemon and zing.

The ‘Scorched sweetshop daquiri’ sugar-coated our senses, with the amazing Stroh rum soaked marshmallow that bursts into flame with a flick of Sanchez’ wrist, and then slowly burned and ‘plopped’ into the pink froth below.

We had the ethereal ‘Blushing rose mojito’ with ruby rose petals and a delicate, not-too-sweet grapefruit floral flavour, and the dainty ‘Honey foam mojito’ which softly dissolved, all lime and fairy-like.

Another was the ‘Smoked margarita’ with its interesting and superior flavour of Vista bars signature black pepper tequila and in-house smoked lemon juice.

My favourite
And for me, the absolute shock of delight was the ‘Lava lamp’. A serious bright blue with Blue Caracao caviar floating up and down the glass, a drink fit for an alien princess. (That was me, by then).

Dj’s
To round off a great drinking experience, Vista Bar have top djs spinning the decks every night of the week.

Prices
Cocktails range from R29 – R69, but if you want French Champers or specialist whiskies, be prepared to pay, (a shot of Pappy Van Winkle’s 23 yrs is R895). There is a huge range of liqueurs and spirits from around the world, and the enormous floor to ceiling wine cellar in Maze to choose from as well.

Go drink!
