TIME Magazine says scientists were wrong about fat

Have you seen the latest cover of TIME Magazine? When we spotted it two words jumped out at us – “Eat butter”.

TIME has reported that scientists have now admitted to being wrong about their findings regarding the LCHF, ketogenic, Atkins, and Paleo diets.  For decades we’ve been told that saturated fat (ie. fat that comes from animal sources such as red meat, poultry and full-cream dairy) is bad for one’s health – and has been associated with heart disease, diabetes and obesity. But only in recent years have sugar and refined carbs become the culprits.

What we were led to believe

Think about it, all those low fat yoghurts and “healthy” commercial mueslis on the supermarket shelves are surreptitiously loaded with corn syrup or artificial sweetners. But nobody told you that they were high sugar, did they? Some say that this is because large food corporations have been profiting from these low-fat “diet” foods. We’ve been ingrained to always choose the fat-free or low-fat version of any food – thinking that it’s better for us. Is this because we’ve spent so many years believing that fat was our enemy and that it would make us fat?

According to this article in the Examiner, TIME’s cover story stated that, “the 40-year demonization of saturated fat as the cause of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease was based on flawed data”.

Banting

SA’s own Professor Tim Noakes has been advocating a low carb high fat way of eating after finding out that he was carbohydrate resistant. He too, acknowledged that there were errors in his initial nutritional findings and his new book, The Real Meal Revolution is selling like hot fishcakes. We’ve even created a LCHF hub on our site for those of our readers who are Banting. The demand is big. Of course not everyone feels the same about eliminating carbs as suggested by Noakes. (just read some of the comments on our articles!).

What does all this mean though? Well, for one – we believe that the world is much more aware of nutritional health than ever before and the fact that TIME Magazine has chosen to come out with a cover such as this, is very telling.
