Melville’s relatively new Mootee Bar has been named one of the 10 Best New Cocktails Bars in the 2018 Spirit Awards. The African-inspired watering hole has been making waves ever since it opened last year.

Devin Cross, co-owner at Mootee Bar told Food24, “The nomination is so significant to us because it’s a sign that we’re achieving what we set out to do – that was to change people’s perception of Africa as well as to put the South African bar scene on the map. What makes it so special is the fact that we have no external investors, Mootee is 100% bartender owned.”

Side note: We’ve tasted Devin’s cocktails and they are incredible!

Mootee – as the name might suggest, uses local African ingredients, inspired by traditional healing rituals to produce one of a kind beverage(and culinary) experiences. It’s these unique experiences and true homage to African culture that sets Mootee apart from the rest. Throw in the fact that all the bartenders are of the top calibre, with a big part of their work being more ‘scientists’ than bartenders… they have a special drinks laboratory in which all their wild and wonderful concoctions are created, like their popular The mvulamlomo – meaning “mouth opener”, made with Marula Rum, Milk Tart distillate and Cream Sherry. “Something strong to open the mouth and get a conversation started, is always a must at lebola negotiations.”

Mootee Bar is open:

Wednesday, Thursday 14:00 – 00:00
Friday 14:00 – 02:00
Saturday 12:00- 02:00
