Justine
Drake, Taste Festival Director, comments: “Taste of Cape Town is a much awaited
highlight on the city’s social calendar. It’s a one-stop shop for the best
food, wine and gourmet goodies the Cape has to offer.”

We had a chat to her about all that’s new, hip and happening at the show.

Q: What’s new at this year’s event?

A: We’ve got a really fabulous Small Producers Market showcasing artisanal cheeses, relishes, pestos, fudge, culinary aloe products, olive oils and a host of other things. There also a very swish oyster bar featuring a host of fresh oysters with exotic toppings.

Of course there are also loads of new restaurants (plus a few old favourites) – the award winning Green House at the Cellars Hohenhort, Bistro Sixteen82 at Steenberg, Nobu and Maze to name just a few.

We’ve also got the Johnnie Walker Whisky theatre where you get to learn about and taste a host of the golden elixir!

Q: What’s the venue like?

A: I love its central location, the loads of parking in the vicinity and the incredible mountain view backdrop.

Q: Which chefs are new and happening?

A: Well all of them really! Each of the chefs/restaurants is hand-picked because they’re doing something that’s worth shouting about. That said, Bertus Basson from Overture is doing some interesting things with the humble hamburger and there’s everything from scallops and soft shell crab to coconut braised oxtail and pork knuckle terrine.

Q: What wineries are doing great things, are there any specific ones to watch for?

A: Orange River Wines are from the Northern Cape and they are shaking up the market in the Western Cape with their incredible range. One of which is a Bafana Bafana range in support of our team for the upcoming 2010 World Cup.

Allee Bleue Estate will be pairing their exquisite wines with their own estate-grown olives.

Also Bosman Family Vineyards will be inviting guests to join the Bosman Family Wine Club which gives members exclusive tours and tastings of their estate at their convenience and free delivery of their wines to any address in South Africa.

Q: What are the hot new foodie trends?

A: Provenance, knowing where your food comes from, who made it, how they made it and what the animals ate.

There is a real focus on local produce and keeping food miles in check.  All this leads to the upsurge in Farmer’s Markets and home delivery organic shopping boxes.  There is also a huge move towards having a small kitchen garden even if you live in a flat.

Q: Who is Taste of Cape Town’s nominated charity this year?

A: This year it’s StreetSmart –  StreetSmart South Africa is a conduit fundraising initiative that contribute directly towards enabling street children to live a viable life in society.

We will have donation boxes stationed at each restaurant where visitors are encouraged to donate their ‘crowns’ to support this fantastic cause.
