A bottle of 1985 Romanee-Conti Burgundy wine fetched 87 000 kronor (12 610 dollars) at a Swedish drinks auction last week, auction officials said on Wednesday.
The sale price was a record for a single bottle of wine sold in Sweden, beating out the 37 000 kronor (5 368 dollars) paid for a 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
“This vintage is very special. This 1985 vintage is a very sought-after wine,” Anna Burman of the Swedish alcohol distribution monopoly Systembolaget who appraised the wine for the Stockholm’s Auktionsverk auction house, told AFP.
Systembolaget described the wine, made from the pinot noir grape, as having a “powerful fruitiness and delicate elegance”. The small vinyard produces only 5 400 bottles a year and its soil “is considered one of France’s national treasures”, it said.
The wine would also be well-served by further storage, Burman said.
The buyer was a Swede, but no other details were disclosed.
In March, six magnums of 1985 Romanee-Conti were sold for more than 170 000 dollars at a Christie’s auction in New York. That price is the equivalent of more than 14 200 dollars a regular-sized wine bottle.
That sale marked a new world record for a case of wine at auction.
