The 2013 Boerewors Champion

Bob Makheta has been crowned as 2013’s newest Boerewors champion in the 21st Championship Boerewors competition.

The final round of this popular South African competition, hosted yearly by Shoprite and Checkers, was hosted by the famous actresses Brumilda van Rensburg and Sharleen Surtie Richards, while some local artists kept the crowd entertained and the contestants’ nerves at bay.

After 5 gruelling months of various rounds, Bob and nine other finalists had to battle it out for the grand title.

This year, the finalists’ boerewors was judged by various celebrity chefs and experts in the culinary industry.

Martin Kobald (award winning chef and Honorary President of the South African Chefs Association)
Carmen Niehaus (YOU and Huisgenoot Food editor)
Arnold Tanzer (Sunday Times Chef of the Year 2008 and culinary producer for MasterChef SA)
Francois Ferreira (SA food evangelist and co-owner of the Eden School of Culinary Art)
Lungile Nhlanhla (contributing food editor for Drum Magazine and Top 5 finalist for MasterChef Season 1)

Bob, a senior meat technician at Shoprite Chatsworth in Durban, had never entered the competition before and decided to give it a go after all his friends urged him to show off his culinary skills.

He remained tight lipped about his secret spice and techniques he used during the competition, but did credit his friends, colleagues and family’s on-going support as one of his greatest strengths during the competition.

Bob’s championship boerewors will receive the South African Chef’s Association Seal of Approval, guaranteeing that all the ingredients are of the best quality.

Boerie lovers can look out for the 2013 Championship Boerewors in their nearest Shoprite and Checkers stores as from Friday, 11 October.

Well done Bob!
