Ten Wines to help you get lucky on Valentine’s Day!

No, I am definitely not claiming that drinking these wines will give you greater success with the opposite sex. But it’s a nice thought isn’t it?! If drinking wine would up your attractiveness, then I would be Angelina Jolie, but as it is, here are some suggestions of appropriate gifts or fun things to drink with your loved one on the 14th or, indeed, any day of the year.

Zandvliet My Best Friend White 2010   R37 from the farm

This is a great present for whoever is special to you on Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t have to be a partner, it could easily just be someone who means a lot to you and who you want to spend some quality time with enjoying a bottle of this fresh, clean and fruity blend – bet Food24 Ed. Sam would like a glass or two on Monday night!

Buitenverwachting Blanc de Noir 2010    R40 from specialist retailers
Yes, I know pink is a bit cheesy at Valentine’s Day, but hey – there is nothing wrong with a bit of cheese. And actually, that would go wonderfully well with this wine – full of strawberry fruit, hints of herbs and a fresh finish. You could linger for hours over some delicious chevre or Brie and a bottle of this – or you could just go straight to bed of course!

Knorhoek Konfetti 2010     R55 from the farm

Giving a bottle of this wine for Valentine’s Day all depends whereabouts you are in your relationship. If you’ve been together some time, then take it to the next level with a beribboned ring tied around a bottle of this fun celebratory pink fizz.  But be careful – if you’ve only been together a few weeks, talking about confetti this early on could make your partner head for the hills!

Weltevrede  MCC’s – any of them!!
Philip Jonker takes the absolute biscuit for making romantic wines any day of the week. His entire MCC range is created from love, devotion and passion. Just check out the names –
•    Entheos (R80) = enthusiasm, inspired, ardour, fervour, fire, passion. A refreshing citrussy fizz.
•    The Ring 2007 (R105) = seal, completion, symbol, bond, promise, allegiance. 100% Chardonnay, bone dry with a savoury edge.
•    Aletheia 2006 (R135) = true, integrity, sincerity, free from pretence. Rich and ripe with plenty of yeasty, brioche notes.
•    And finally, the ultimate romantic fizz, the Rose (R99) named after his wife, Lindelize. Delicate and dry with fresh strawberry hints.

Vrede en Lust Mocholate Malbec 2010 R78.66 from the farm
Peace and Passion – and chocolate – what else do I need to say?? This is the award-winning coffee/chocolate Malbec and is a fabulously sexy wine for a very long evening with that jar of body paint…..

Allee Bleue Toujours Amour 2007    R140 from specialist retailers
Love Forever – what a great message for Valentine’s Day! This is an interesting blend of Bordeaux and Rhone varieties aged in French oak and left to rest for a year or so. It’s smooth, rich, spicy and seductive – if only I were talking about a man, not a wine!

Solo Wines Viognier 2009 R65-R70 from independent retailers
Hey – not everyone gets lucky in love. But if you’re on your own this year, it doesn’t mean you should settle for anything less than the best. Sip a glass of this elegant apricoty Viognier, order in your favourite take-out (I’d recommend Thai with this wine) and spoil yourself. You deserve it!
