Summer gatherings

I had my first juicy bite of summer on Sunday.

It was a cool, pink watermelon after a family braai and I showed my little boy how to spit the pips. Ok, he’s not even two yet, but he tried. It was his first bite too… ever.

He giggled and sucked and it all dripped down his chin and onto his naked little belly. Then we licked our sticky hands and lay down on the grass and watched the trees sway warmly in the afternoon sun.

A watermelon wedge of heaven.

Summer food is here ladies and gents, in full colourful force, along with all the fun that comes with it.

There’s the picnics on the beach after a spontaneous call or two on a Thursday night. With baskets and bags jammed with breads, pates and cold meat washed gleefully down with the sound of the waves and some cold white wine.

The cocktails after work on a Friday evening that turn into dinner at the local Italian, with the table outside, a shining moon and a pizza that,  ‘is the best thing I’ve ever tasted’ , devoured with extra  garlic and chilli.

And what about the quiet evenings at home, still in a cossy after a swim after work. You could try something easy and funky like my strawberry, basil and baby spinach salad with sweet balsamic dressing. Or something with a bit of a twist like this warm orange and butternut salad served with crispy bacon and pinenuts.

There’s no stopping us now…

Invite your friends over for a gathering in the garden or move the dining room table, chuck some cushions down and go Moroccan-style. Everyone brings a bottle and you can make some beer chicken with a spicy rub and some special potato wedges and a made-with-everything  salad. Hey, you’ve got a party!

So it’s summer and it’s casual. Get your slops on and take off your make-up. Let’s relax.
