Spur serves mouldy buns to a customer – his Facebook post goes viral

Cape Town, 15 April 2015 –

It hasn’t been a good week for Spur Steak Ranches’ marketing.  A customer who claims to have received his burger on a mouldy bun posted a picture of it on Facebook on the 13th of April, and so far it has been shared more than 1800 times. Every brand’s nightmare.

Facebook user David Matfield ordered a burger at the Silver Mountain Spur in Cape Town. When it arrived he posted a picture on Facebook he claims show mould on the bottom of the bun.

There have been a number of messages and comments about the offending bun to the Spur Facebook page.

While we appreciate that buns do get mouldy (and we have definitely seen worse) – we also think that food being served to customers should always be quality checked.  No matter how busy the outlet.

South Africans love the family-friendly Spur franchise and we hope that quality checks become more stringent after this unfortunate incident.

David Matfield’s facebook post:

And this is what Spur serves to their customers now days… and they get their buns daily… now I am really keen to try my Spur burger… NOT Spur

In our opinion a very sensible and balanced view of what happened.

Spur Steak Ranches has sent Food24 an official statement regarding the incident:

“We cannot excuse this and are extremely disappointed and embarrassed that this burger roll was served in one of our restaurants. This poor food quality is not Spur standard and disciplinary action is being taken against those responsible. All management in this branch will undergo retraining to ensure Spur’s stringent food quality control procedures are adhered to. Our sincerest apologies once again to David for the poor experience”.

What are your thoughts? Shocking! Or, these things happen in the hospitality industry?
