Spring fever food!

I went back to gym on Monday.

And man oh man, that scale is so broken. Or not?

I have unwittingly (or not) fallen into the delicious cavern of winter num-nums and nice big jerseys that don’t show any bumps or lumps. But now that the sun is shining so happily, those jerseys cannot be worn anymore. Damn.

There’s a strange something in the air. Not only the itchy pollen that makes me sound even more nasal than I already am, but the raw energy of new life and the excitement of the summer that is to come.

The roasting tins will have to be put away for a little while and I shall become the pinnacle of health and wellness and don a Colgate smile.

I can picture myself now, Julie Andrews-style skipping in a field of flowers clutching a huge basket of scarlet strawberries and laughing. Wait, I look a little like a maniac and all the strawberries are falling out and I trip and bite the dust. So much for day-dreaming.

The point is, it’s not as easy as pie to shift an eating pattern, because I still want pie, I want lots of pie. And all types of melted cheese; and hot oozing chocolate puddings; and…

Pull yourself together woman! The plan is to change direction, to focus and to remember the wonder of a wedge of watermelon. Oh yes, and the pure delight of green asparagus dipped in a homemade mayo, and the long summer lunches that last the entire day filled with giggles and truckloads of crisp white wine.

It’s all coming back to me now.

Fresh smoothies for breakfast and beautiful homegrown tomatoes that we leave to blush a hot red in the summer sun. Colourful grilled pepper salads and Rubenesque pink figs dripping in honey make me weak at the knees.

It’s the taste of the sea in a fat oyster with cracked black pepper and lemon, bare feet and fish braai’s to look forward to that moves me excitedly into Spring.
