Following the Jubilee celebration weekend, the Heads of Commonwealth were feasted by the Queen at a lunch at Marlboro House. No wines from any other countries were served to the guests – who included the premiers of both Australia and New Zealand – in a rare and gratifying shot in the arm for South African wine.
James Mckenzie, owner of Nabygelegen, reveals that his wines were chosen by a catering company in the UK called ‘Inn or Out’. The company, who have used his wines on many other occasions, is very involved with the Prince’s Trust, a UK charity.
When they were asked to cater for this Royal event, they selected the Nabygelegen Chenin Blanc 2008 and the Nabygelegen Snow Mountain Pinot Noir 2009 as the perfect partners to go with their menu of brie and avocado terrine, a main of wild sea bass and a dessert of apple crumble soufflé served with apple pie ice cream.
The Royal seal of approval comes at an appropriate time for Nabygelegen as they celebrate their 300th birthday this year. James says that there will be a series of parties and other events later on in the year, along with a specially-released wine called Beulah in honour of his mother.
Nabygelegen has recently undergone many changes including the opening of a new tasting centre in the old Stables. Private functions and wine events can also be held here with guests able to stay over in the newly-refurbished River Cabin and Gatehouse.
