Songkran at Wang Thai

Songkran, also commonly known as “The Water Festival”, is the traditional Thai New Year that is celebrated from 13th – 15th April. This is by far the most significant and devout event on the Thai calendar.

This year they have given their support to the iThemba Pre-Primary Schoold in Philippi. Wang Thai in conjunction with Grand West Casino CSI have partnered to host a culinary extravaganza and fundraising auction. Invited guests includes top businesspersons, celebrities and the media of Cape Town.

This years event will be hosted at the exclusive Wang Thai Grand West Casino Restaurant. The menu will be prepared by masterful head-chefs specifically for the evening.

“This year our aim is to raise R120 000 to ensure that the school can continue to serve one daily meal to the children, as well as equip them with the furniture and stationary they need to be fully functional,” said Chai Lekcharoensuk, MD of Cape Thai Restaurant Holdings.

The event takes place of Friday the 11th of April at Grandwest Casino. Seats are limited at a cost of R350.00, for more information contact Elizabeth Roux at liz.roux@gmail.com

Food24 sampled the menu on 10/04/08 at the Camps Bay Wang Thai.

We tried the calamari green curry springrolls and steamed prawns with garlic and chilli for starters. The green curry springrolls were a bit dry but still quite delicious while the steamed prawns were steamed to perfection but lacked a chilli or garlic kick.

The soup was nice and fiery and we found the combination of sweet and sour flavours just right however biting into a bitter dried chilli wasn’t that pleasant.

For mains we had the Roasted duck with ginger and coconut milk and pan fried line fish with Chu-Chee curry sauce. Both dished were exceptional. The duck was rich and stickily delicious. The Chu-Chee curry line fish was pan fried so it had a nice crispy layer locking in the natural flavours thereby preventing it from being smothered by the mild but flavourful Chu-Chee curry sauce. Absolutely delicious.

Wang Thai has a variety of western-style desserts, from cheesecake to malva pudding, for more Thai dessert options ask your waiter for some recommendations.

We found the Songkran set menu to be good value for money with efficient and friendly service.
