Small freezer? No problem! Here’s how to maximise the space you have in 4 steps

We’ve discussed how to organise your freezer here on Food24, but how do you make the most of the space you have? If you have a small ice box, you can still enjoy the benefits and convenience of frozen products with these tips:

1. Get rid of soft packets

When we spoke about organising the freezer, we mentioned that loose veg should go into a container. This is particularly true if you have a small freezer – packets are not easy to stack, and you won’t make the most of the vertical height of your small space.

Bonus: McCain has a selection of frozen veggies available in convenient 250g packs if you’re trying to save space.

2. Get rid of cardboard boxes

Seafood or burgers often comes in cardboard boxes which are great, but once you’ve used one or two portions the box will take up extra space. If you throw the box away, cut out the cooking instructions and save them on the fridge door with a magnet.

3. Minimise the bonus items

Some items, such as gel packs or ice bricks, are useful to have in the freezer, but they also take up essential space. Save only two ice bricks and one gel pack for emergencies and store the rest in the cupboard.

4. Rotate, rotate, rotate

Rotate the items in your freezer regularly by using the principle: First In, First Out. This way you use the oldest things first, maintaining freshness and flavour.
