Self-driving pizza delivery cars are here

On 8 January one of the world’s most famous pizza brands, Pizza Hut tweeted news about its partnership with Toyota in launching the “e-Palette”, a self-driving vehicle that delivers pizzas.

This kind of service would probably have seemed rather far-fetched (aka impossible) a few years ago – like watching a scene out of that animated cartoon, The Jetsons.

Entrepreneur reports that plans to begin testing the e-Pallete will begin in 2020 but in the meantime, Toyota is aiming to learn more about pizza delivery. If we can give them one tip – the pizzas should always arrive piping hot!

While this technological advancement might excite pizza lovers the world over, those that are avid watchers of the series Black Mirror are pretty freaked out according to Business Insider. Black Mirror explores stories that tap into the collective unease about the modern world based on technology. The episode called “Crocodile” particularly resonates with fans as it features a road accident between a pedestrian and self-driving vehicle. You can probably imagine both the ramifications and complications of this scenario (which could now potentially become a reality).

Either way, we salute the innovative way that Pizza Hut is moving forward. In an article on Adweek, Pizza Hut U.S. president Artie Starrs says, “In our ongoing and relentless pursuit to own and define the modern pizza experience for our customers, we are focused on technology-based solutions that enable our team members and drivers to deliver even better customer experiences,”.
