Scary food

I will never forget Harrison Ford in ‘The temple of doom’ looking all rugged and sweaty when he popped the top off a monkeys head and dipped his spoon into the squidgy brains.

He looked terribly alarmed and I suppose he was trying to impress a cannibal chief, but it scared me. Even Indiana Jones can’t eat brains.

But hey, to each her own. Maybe cannibals would gawp at the thought of a Caesar salad.

I, on the other hand, don’t like to eat any vital organs or things that have bodily function. Except livers of course.

Oh wow, chicken livers peri-peri perfectly fired up to the right hotness with fat wedges of ciabatta all soaked in garlic butter. Even the husband can eat this holy sauce, although he can’t touch the actual livers; it’s something to do with school and texture.

Some people can do tongue. Not me, it really pushes my creepy button, I like to eat the food, not have the food eat me. And the thought of tripe and blood sausage sends my imagination running amok… in a bad way. Not glamorous or very foodie I know, but 2 years in Ireland will do that to you. (They looove their black puddin’!)

And how about a smiley? Take a sheep’s head and cook it whole, the lips curl back and literally grin at you. Now that’s scary. But African nonetheless, and we’re all African here. Hmm, try a Mopani worm and come back to me.

Calamari and prawns; if you think about it, are also pretty weird things to eat, but they are SO delicious I don’t think of huge red creepy crawlies with long feelers that flap like mad when you take them out of their watery homes. Brrrrr.

No, I think of grilled prawns with coriander and chillis sizzling on the braai. The crayfish lie next to them looking perfectly succulent, bursting with that sweet white meat that is just begging to be devoured by my salivating jaws. Yum.

Truth be told, we’re all a bit cooked, and whatever you decide to flavour just so and lay on your tongue is your own personal choice. Don’t you just love that?
