SA’s very own celebrity chef takes top honours in Sydney

Celebrity chef Pete Goffe-Wood of Kitchen Cowboys and MasterChef South Africa fame has won the title of Best Dessert Pizza at the Global Pizza Challenge in Sydney Australia.

After attending the Good Food and Wine Show in Cape Town over the weekend, Pete jetted off to Sydney on Sunday evening to represent South Africa in the prestigious competition. The chefs had to make two pizzas each, one traditional pizza and one dessert pizza.

Best dessert pizza in the world

His Ostrich Bobotie on a pale ale base with Tomato Pronto chakalaka and peach chutney pizza lost out to the defending Australian champion in the traditional pizza category but his dessert pizza of Nutella, figs, Italian meringue, hazelnuts and mascarpone cheese walked away with the title of ‘Best Dessert Pizza in the World’.

Pete expressed his delight from Sydney, ‘The Global Pizza Challenge is a fantastic way for different cultures to showcase the ethnicity through the humble pizza. I was just proud to be there representing South Africa – winning the dessert prize was totally unexpected. The actual idea for the topping only came together in the last couple of days – it was meant to be a play on Black Forest Gateaux but I couldn’t find cherries and had to go with the more seasonal figs and it proved to be the master stroke.’

The Global Pizza Challenge

The Global Pizza Challenge was founded in Australia to promote and encourage culinary innovation within the world’s most popular food – pizza. From humble beginnings, it is has developed into the world’s biggest pizza competition, selecting national winners to compete in the Global Final.
