One of my friend’s recent Facebook status’ read “Cape Town is on fire with its food offering”. I gave it a Like, naturally. Not because we’re friends, but because I wholeheartedly agree!
A few days later, we got the news that Cape Town has been ranked as the 3rd best food city IN THE WORLD by Condé Nast Traveller. How cool is that? I could go on for days talking about all the amazing things that are happening on the Mother City’s chopping board like the new burger bar with what must be the lowest carbon footprint of any restaurant I’ve ever walked into.
What’s really amazing though is that there’s a rumbling in the rest of SA’s tummy and things are hotting up all over the country. I’m on way down to the Eastern Cape tomorrow (my home province!) to talk about online food media at the Bedford SoulFood Festival. I think it’s wonderful that small towns like this are starting to draw people to their food paradise and showcase what the local region has to offer. And let me tell you, it has LOTS!

Joburg is gearing up for the first Oreo pop-up store and have you been to one of its trendy markets? KZN is also making a mark with its beer route. There’s just so much happening all over the place. I am finding it all rather overwhelming but in the best way possible. BBC Good Food has even predicted that “South African specialities” are trending for 2015. I’ll give that a thumbs up!
Plett is coming to the party with a cool Food Film Festival over the Plett MAD Festival in July.
The annual Street Food Festival is happening in Cape Town soon and let’s not forget The WORLD CLASS™ 2015 Global Finals are taking place here in September where the world’s best bartender will be announced. It’s a huge event bringing people from all corners of the globe as well as the actual craftsmen of the world’s best spirits like Don Julio Tequila and Ron Zacapa rum. Prepare to have your socks knocked off!
Don’t think I’ve forgotten about wine though. One of our Chardonnays has just won Best Chardonnay in The World.
I am just so proud of us I could burst.
