Romantic red wines

‘Red, red wine, you make me feel so fine’ – was Ali Campbell onto a good thing when UB40 had their most famous hit all those years ago? It seems so as, according to a recent online survey, 59% of women would prefer to receive a bottle of red wine for Valentine’s Day as opposed to 41% who would choose sweets or chocolates.

The way to woo your woman appears to be with red wine rather than white with descriptions such as ‘smooth and sophisticated’ winning out over ‘big and bold’, although a ‘fresh and fruity’ Chardonnay is always welcome according to the majority of respondents.

Sadly, it seems as if many of us wine-loving romantics are destined for disappointment this year (again!) with expectations of the same-old, same-old candy and flowers coming top in the poll. But it’s not too late to break out from the mould and give your lady what she really wants this year – and I’m sure a good bottle of wine will work for men as well. Here are my recommendations for a red hot loving weekend!

Warwick ‘The First Lady’ – a Cabernet-based blend with a label guaranteed to go down well this Sunday! Smooth and elegant with lots of juicy black fruits, it really tells your loved one what you think of her this year (PS – of course, if you had something naughtier in mind, you could always drop the hint with a bottle of Warwick Three Cape Ladies instead!!). RRP approx R65, Ultra Liquors.

Diemersfontein Pinotage – the original and still the best. What woman could possibly resist the combination of her favourite things – wine and chocolate – in one neat package? Take me to bed and lose me forever! RRP approx R60, Pick n Pay.

Arniston Bay Cabernet Sauvignon – a wine as wild and rugged as the coastline, who can possibly resist the man who brings a bottle of this to your door? Great food partner, preferably enjoyed somewhere nice and secluded and outdoors…. RRP approx R45 Pick n Pay

Journey’s End Merlot – look no further fella, this is the wine for me! Sophisticated, elegant, packed with ripe berries and a hint of chocolate, this wine will make sure wherever she roams, she’ll always come back to you in the end. RRP R125, selected specialst retailers.

What’s your red-hot tipple for this weekend?
