Red wine is good for you!

NewsFlash! NewsFlash! Some of the best news I’ve heard in a while was published online this week – Red Wine is good for you!! Well okay, maybe that isn’t quite as important as world peace or England winning the Ashes back at cricket, but I have to say that I think it’s pretty exciting.

According to this article in the SA Wine Directory scientists have discovered 23 entirely new molecules which are linked to resveratrol, a chemical already proven to enhance longevity and improve age-related diseases such as Alzheimers.

Obviously I always knew that red wine was good for me  – a bottle of Cabernet to ward off a cold, a big glass of Pinot Noir to cure a twisted ankle, that kind of thing – but the idea that drinking lots of it will make me live even longer so I can drink even more of it, is frankly intoxicating. Literally.

What more good news is there on the site this week? Well lots of delicious recipes for a start, especially my favourite – 3 winter puddings. My mother always said “A little of what you fancy, does you good” and boy, do I fancy all those! Winter is clinging on with unprecedented tenacity here in the Cape, so I’m pleased to see lots of things to drink with my red wine this week as well – this Lamb and Mushroom Stew should keep the winter at bay!

If you don’t want to cook at home, go and enjoy a glass of red wine (no more, cos we don’t want you drinking and driving!) out at your favourite restaurant with the family. We’ve got suggestions of Child-friendly restaurants in Joburg and Child-friendly Restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands as well. Now all we need is Durban – who’s going to start us off?? Email us on editor@food24.com with your suggestions please because the families of KZN need you….

Our beloved editor Caro is on her way back from sunnier climes at the moment and I shall be playing tag with her, flying off to Mauritius as she returns – having stirred the pot and offended all Spur-lovers and Wine List of the Year restaurants, I thought it was probably a good idea! But I’ll still be supping on the red wine, whatever the weather, improving my brain power and extending my shelf-life, so happy days and happy and healthy drinking to you all – chin chin!
