Partner content: Chip-eating etiquette 101

We’ve all been there: you eagerly await your food, envisioning that first bite of a deliciously crispy chip. You see the waitron approach, catch a glimpse of the steaming golden pile of chips, and you feel the excitement rise up. But what’s this? As soon as your plate hits the table, your friend reaches over and grabs a chip! The shock! The horror! The sheer audacity!

Okay, we might have exaggerated slightly, but did you know that according to the unspoken rules of chip eating, or chip etiquette if you will, if you are good friends, they’re totally within their rights to grab a chip off your plate. At McCain, we’re all about potatoes, and we simply love chips with every occasion. We love chips so much we wanted to share these chip-eating rules to make sure you get the most out of every chip-sharing moment.

According to chip-eating etiquette, if you ordered chips and your friends didn’t (why is a question only they can answer!), they’re allowed to grab a chip off your plate if:

Even when one, or all, of the above stipulations are met, there are rules! If you’re the chip grabber, you don’t grab the most delicious chip. You know the one – that long, thick, golden chip that is perfectly fried so you just know it’s crispy on the outside and perfectly fluffy on the inside. It stands out among the rest. Don’t grab that one, don’t be that guy or gal, grab a smaller one from the corner of the pile.

If you happen to be somewhere a tad fancier and they don’t bring a pile of chips, but rather about 10 of those delicious thick-cut wedges that remind you of Sunday lunch roast potatoes … then hands off! Those are meant solely for the clever person who ordered chips with their meal.

What about leftovers, I hear you ask. You know, the chippies the person didn’t eat and politely pushed to the side of their plate. In that case, the people at the table who didn’t get chips with their food get first dibs, and then the others who already had chips but are just being greedy can have some.

Then there’s the other side of the story: making chips at home. Thanks to McCain, you can have perfect chips for everyone to enjoy in the comfort of your home. Whether you prefer crispy thin cut, rustic wedges or smiley faces, they’ve got something to please everyone.

And there you have it. If this article dispels even one chip-related argument, we’ve done our job! If everyone lived according to chip-eating etiquette, the world may just become a slightly better place.
