Couple making pizza together

Who doesn’t love pizza? While they sometimes get a bad rap for being “unhealthy”, they really don’t have to be. Homemade pizzas, especially, can be so underrated. Not only can they help you meet your nutritional goals, but they can also add variety to your diet.

When it comes to pizza toppings, frozen veggies, like the ones from McCain, are often overlooked. Not only are they convenient, healthy and inexpensive, but they also open up a range of unconventional and exciting pizza options. The chances are you may already have some interesting pizza toppings in your freezer that you may not have considered.

If you make your own pizza, you can cater to everyone’s food preferences – from the most adventurous eaters to that one picky family member (every family has one) – and you’re free to put literally anything on your pizza without a restaurant’s menu limitations. While the “Does pineapple belong on pizza?” debate continues to create controversy, if you make pizza at home, not only can you avoid pizza-topping judgment, but you can also find some creative ways to sneak veggies into your kids’ diets (or even your own).

In addition to your standard pizza toppings (tomato paste and cheese), here are some ideas for some exciting and nutritious pizzas:

1. Chicken and broccoli pizza

Not everyone loves broccoli but if you stick McCain’s Broccoli Florets on a pizza with some chicken, it’s hard not to.

2. Diced beetroot pizza

If you’ve ever had roasted beetroot on a pizza, you too are probably surprised that this is not a more common pairing. Add some feta cheese and pumpkin brittle to your McCain Diced Beetroot for some extra flavour. You can thank us later.

3. Spinach pizza

Veto the tomato paste for this one and add some McCain Garden Spinach to a pizza base, along with some ricotta, parmesan, mozzarella and seasonings. Basil, mushrooms and garlic also go well on a spinach pizza, or “Florentine pizza”, as they call it in Italy.

4. Roast pumpkin pizza

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Roast some McCain Pumpkin Chunks and put them on a pizza with some goat’s cheese or ricotta. Yum! It also goes really well with a combination of feta cheese, olives and mushrooms.

5. Pea pesto pizza

Okay, so the idea of putting McCain Garden Peas on a pizza may sound a little out there, but not if you add some basil vinaigrette and ricotta cheese. Anything to keep the peas!

6. Asian stir-fry pizza

You can combine the flavours of both Asia and Europe into one exciting fusion dish by putting McCain’s Asian Stir Fry Vegetable Mix on a pizza together with some peanut satay sauce. You can keep it as a #MeatFreeMonday option or add a little chicken into the mix.

With McCain frozen veggies, pizza night will never be the same again! Whether you discover a new favourite and stick to it or try something new every time, the options for healthy tasty meals are endless.
