I
guess it is no surprise to everyone that books are featuring large at
this time of year – I love giving books as pressies and to my mind,
there is nothing better to receive than a book token (hope my husband
is reading this). And if you are of a vinous turn, then there are three
very different, all fantastic books out for you to buy this Christmas.
My first book for Christmas is the Food & Wine Pairing Guide
for those of you who really need to know the best wine match for duck
with sauerkraut (Pinot Noir apparently!). If you are into weird and
wonderful eating and want to know what goes with what, I guarantee you
that they will have thought of it.
For those of you who like to know EVERYTHING, check out my review of one of the most venerable of wine books – the John Platter Wine Guide. Now in its 30th year, it tells you everything you need to know and a whole lot more which you never knew existed either.
But if you don’t take wine and life that seriously (and why should you?), then take a look at the new wine book on the block, The People’s Guide.
Written by Michael Olivier and Neil Pendock, this gives you the inside
track to supermarket wine shopping. The book rates more than 560 wines
and offers a straightforward, easy-to-use guide to what to buy,
whatever your budget.
There has been huge debate over the last
year about whether wine judges and tasters should know what wines they
are tasted or whether they should be assessed ‘blind’ ie with the
labels covered. Is this a fairer way of commenting on exactly what is
in the bottle or should good tasters be able to see beyond the label
and still offer an impartial opinion? Tell us what you think.
