Our epic restaurant guide to 7 of Joburg’s best gourmet zones

We’ve shared loads of recommendations for Joburg restaurants over the last few months and thought it would be a great idea to compile them all into one giant list for you! Things are seriously heating up in the Jozi food scene… been to one of these live music spots? Or heard about Marble’s new luxe butchery that launched last night? Here’s where to eat when you’re in:

1. Greenside
A few years ago, Greenside’s culinary scene was counted amongst the most exciting in South Africa. It went through a bit of a lull as some of the more serious chefs moved away, but things are definitely hotting up again.

2. Sandton
Scan the Sandton skyline, and you’ll notice corporates and malls – and where there are office workers, there are hungry people looking for somewhere to spend their lunch break. Just as well, because where there are malls, there are restaurants to be tried.

3. Illovo
It seems that Illovo’s food appeal just keeps growing, with one hot new restaurant after another opening its doors. Whether you’re in the mood for international cuisine or the burger to end all burger cravings, you’ll find what you’re looking for right here.


4. Braamfontein
There’s always so much happening, so much to do and discover – the natural process of cooking up a serious appetite and depleting your energy levels, leaving you with no choice but to eat something.


5. Parktown North
While Parkhurst’s restaurant strip continues to be one of the most famous in the city, just up the road, Parktown North’s collection of eateries has developed into something rather special. From craft beer and cocktails to tasty tapas, whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll find it here.

6. Maboneng
Call it a creative hub, a place of inspiration, the cool kid’s playground or the home of the hippies, whatever floats your boat the; Maboneng Precinct is a neighbourhood renowned for the arts, the infectious vibe and food so good you’d think it’s God sent.


7.  Cyrildene
There are no ATMs, stores are crammed with ingredients you probably won’t recognise, and you may well find that your waitress doesn’t speak English.
