Nourish bowls: the new healthy food trend

Although it’s not necessarily a new concept, the nourish bowl is now gaining traction on the internet making it an actual “thing” – I had a quick squizz on Instagrm and the hashtag #nourishbowl has over 1700 posts! In fact – take a look at this proudly South African account, SexyFoodSA  filled with eye-wateringly healthy, beautiful food.

Simply put, a nourish bowl (or buddah bowl – as it’s known to yogis) is a meal-sized bowl i.e able to be eaten in one sitting, that’s filled with nutrient-dense ingredients. A salad in other words…but not quite. Nourish bowls are meant to be enjoyed with gratitude and mindfulness and although when you look at them, they appear to simply be a mash-up of ingredients, there is a basic “structure” to them.

Here it is:

Base – this usually consists of a wholegrain like brown rice or lentils.

Leafy vegetables – a common “neutral” ingredient that goes with anything. Think lettuce, kale and spinach.

Protein– this could be anything from hard-boiled eggs to slices of steamed chicken or tinned tuna.

Colour – vegetables like butternut, red peppers, beetroot or sweetcorn.

Healthy fats – something like olives or sliced/mashed avocado.

Dressing – A simple vinaigrette or perhaps a creamy tahini dressing or fresh tzatziki.

Texture – raw nuts and seeds to finish it off!

As with anything, the above can be shaken up a little by to create a “sweet” version. Fruit-yoghurt nourish bowl anyone?

Check out this beautiful recipe for a chicken, quinoa and courgette version that you can make in smaller quantities to serve one.
