New Woolworths natural flavour range

Woolworths has become one of the first companies in South Africa to offer yoghurts made with only natural flavours and colours and containing no added preservatives and no artificial sweeteners.

In addition, all Woolworths yoghurts are made with rBST- hormone free milk and there are an average of 15 percent less sugar across the range.

rBST is an artificial hormone which is generally given to cows to make them produce more milk. Though there are no scientific evidence that rBST has any harmful effects, Woolworths still decided to make their range rBST-free.

They’ve also increased the nutritional value of all the kids’ yoghurts that are also rBST-free, while the new Pooh Bear range which contains real fruit puree and 30% less sugar than used previously.

The new Woolworths ranges also include MvHOWARU™ probiotic cultures to help stimulate the immune system and assist in lactose digestion. HOWARU™ probiotic cultures help the digestive system function by reducing the growth of harmful bacteria.

Food24 sampled the new Fat Free White Peach, Double Cream Ayrshire Raspberry & Turkish Rose and Low Fat Naartjie and the layered Low Fat Mango Peach Passion.

The fat free ranges has set a new bar for ‘fat free’ yoghurts on the market, with interesting flavours, a smooth texture and rich creamy taste, regardless of the fat-free tag.

Woolworths also improved on the consistency of the layered ranges. Previously the fruit section in their layered yoghurt range was too ‘mousse like’ in consistency and taste, losing out on flavour and texture. However in the new range the fruit section is textured, not too sweet while retaining some of the taste character of the original fruit.

The Double Cream Ayrshire range comes in a variety of flavours, all rich, velvety and quite heavy. It comes highly recommended for the yoghurt connoisseur.

The packaging has also improved with clear identification of ingredients and product identity.
