New Joburg hot spots for cocktails, craft beer, tapas and wine

It’s the season to be jolly – so we’ve rounded up some new Joburg hot spots for cocktails, craft beer, tapas, wine and all sorts of good times. Enjoy!

The Steamworks

Corner Sunset Boulevard and Forest Drive, Fourways, Sandton

From the dream team that brought us The Griffin and Perron comes a steam-punk gastro pub namely ‘The Steamworks’. Expect a similarly-designed, but different, quirky bistro-style menu offering bespoke pizzas, tapas, sliders and more. And, whilst they have the equivalent decadent craft beer selection as The Griffin, they also offer an exceptionally exciting cocktail menu, gorgeous Sunday Roast days and a DJ to get you in the mood every Friday and Saturday night.

Escondido

Post Office Centre, Corner of Rudd Road and Otto Street, Illovo

Just when you thought they couldn’t squeeze another restaurant into Illovo, they did. Escondido is a new hip and happening tapas and wine bar in the Post Office centre just below Assagi. Wooden interiors dappled with oversized chalk boards displaying their ever-changing daily menus, great wines by the glass and superb service make this a must for a quick bite or a lavish evening of indulgence (all at a very good price). Try some of their original craft beers on tap too.

Vicky Christina’s

The Colony Shopping Centre, 345 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall

Sexy and sultry as the name suggests you can expect sleek interiors, a relaxed atmosphere and a cheeky menu starring their Spanish-style pizza (Coca) with seriously original toppings like ham, blackcurrant, Parmesan, rocket and avo or chorizo, marinated figs, almonds, rainbow pepper, pomegranate and rocket. Go for a jug of sangria, a shared meal and plenty of festivities.

Society Eatery and Craft Bar

Mearowdown Plaza, 71 Troupant Avenue, Magaliesig

A fantastic Craft Beer spot where they have an entire tap wall dedicated to craft beer; 12 options in fact. The range includes Darling, Jack Black, Aces, Nottingham Road, a Dragon Fiery Ginger Beer and an American Citizen Alliance Amber Ale. They’ve also got a great selection of whiskeys and a food menu that’s simple but packs a punch: Try the beef brisket on ciabatta, pulled pork tortillas and salt and pepper calamari, all of which can be enjoyed in there lovely outdoor area.

Lenin’s Vodka Bar

300 Commissioner Street, corner Albrecht Street, Maverick Corner, Maboneng

Russian, Polish, French, Swedish…you name it, they have it. Over 40 different Vodkas can be found at this eccentric bar at any one time. And, if you don’t like it straight or on the rocks there’s a great selection of cocktails all under 40 bucks. A simple but tasty menu of fries, sandwiches and flatbreads as well as a happy hour where all cocktails are all R27 from 5-7pm seals the deal.
