In fast food news, McDonald’s is celebrating International Women’s Day with a full social media take over. For the first time in its 60 plus years of operation, the trillion rand industry has flipped the iconic M to a W. With over 18 000 restaurants internationally and millions of world followers, the stunt is bound to get people talking.

In South Africa alone, McDonald’s has over 10 000 employees and over 8 million customers per month.

Wendy Lewis, McDonald’s Chief Diversity Officer, said in a statement for CNBC, “For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women’s Day in honor of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere and especially in our restaurants.” She continued, “From restaurant crew and management to our C-suite of senior leadership, women play invaluable roles at all levels, and together with our independent franchise owners, we’re committed to their success.”
