MasterChef SA: Video

This week the MasterChef SA contestants went on a field trip to the beautiful spice island of Zanzibar. They were divided into the Red Team (Ilse, Lungi, Manisha and Khaya) and the Blue Team (Sarel, Deena, Thys and Sue-Ann).

The challenge

To cook 50 servings of Zanzibari cuisine for the locals and tourists. The winning team was the one that sold the most food, and only two contestants would go into a Pressure Test.

While shopping in the fish market, Khaya felt sick and revealed that she’s preggers! Wow!

The Red Team won with a profit of 218 000 shillings, while the Blue Team made 74 850 shillings.

Spice Identification Test

Members of the Blue Team went into a Spice Identification Test – the first two who identified a spice incorrectly had to go into the Pressure Test.

Pressure Test

Deena and Thys, sadly, went into the pressure test. The challenge: To prepare a cold
smoked Sword fish on top of a quenelle of julienned green papaya salad and
squid ink aioli.

The most delicate part of the dish being the cold smoke. (FYI if you don’t get the smoking right, you’ll cook the fish which is not the aim!). Talk about pressure!

Deena’s dish was a little more well executed all round and
in the end poor, sweet-toothed Thysie was voted off.

He will be missed!
