MasterChef SA: Video

We’re down to the top 5 contestants and things are getting tense! This episode they were treated to a Masterclass by none other than world-renowned chef, Michel Roux Jr. Lucky devils.

Michel owns the Michelin-starred, family restaurant, Le Gavroche in London. He demonstrated the restaurant’s signature dish: stuffed artichokes with chicken livers, chicken mousse and truffles in a Madeira sauce.

The Challenge

To recreate the dish!! But there there was a sneaky catch… they had to make an accompaniment to it – Chicken Ballotine.

‘It’s an Invention Test on top of a recipe! It’s huge!’, was Sarel’s comment. Being in the top 5 is not for sissies!

The one with the top dish would get an advantage for the next challenge in the form of a bell! This bell would enable the winner to ring it once in the next challenge and call on any of the judges for advice on their dish.

Sarel’s ballontine stuffed with Peppadews just didn’t work in harmony, while Sue-Ann’s stuffing leaked out. Eeek! Deena was the only one that wowed the judges with his perfect ballontine stuffed with sausage and pistachios. He definitely understands his flavours, this man. The bell was his!

Poor Lungile didn’t make the cut with her ballontine and she faced the dreaded elimination. Look on the upside girl, you made the top 5!

After everyone completed his or her dishes, Michel said, ‘You cooked from the heart and it has been an unbelievable day for me. A day that will stay with me in my memory forever.’
