Laborie Wine Farm is nestled in the fertile Paarl valley, with the beautiful Paarl rock as background. The farm was granted to Isaac Taillefert in 1691, named after the district of La Bri in France. Laborie has been producing fine wines since 1698 and more than 300 years on, is one of the oldest operational wine farms in South Africa.
Laborie produces some of the best Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines, an array of award-winning wines, an estate brandy and a unique fortified Pinotage dessert wine. In recent years, extensive replanting of especially Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier, has been a focus area for the production of Méthode Cap Classique Brut, Rosé and Blanc de Blancs. The farm subscribes to the principles of sustainable farming and is in the process of reducing herbicide, fungicide and an-organic fertilizer usage. Laborie is a member of the IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) scheme and also a member of WIETA (Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association).
In addition, Laborie was one of the first members of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI). This independent and credible nature conservation initiative promotes awareness of the Western Cape’s unique fynbos floral kingdom. Conservation initiatives aim at preserving eco-sensitive vineyard areas and further aid the re-establishment of natural fynbos. Laborie has demarcated 10 % of the total farm area and has reclaimed certain mountainside vineyards for fynbos regeneration. Laborie borders on Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve and the new fynbos areas attract various species of flora and fauna.
The farm itself offers a host of different attractions to visitors. The historic Manor House is a National Monument and is an idyllic spot for weddings and other events such as board meetings, cocktail parties and private dining. Visitors wishing to stay overnight can book into the tranquil guest house, newly-refurbished to the highest standards. The elegant Laborie Restaurant is currently undergoing its own make-over and will re-open in October with a fresh look and menu of delectable dishes.
At weekends, the popular ‘Laborie Lazy Days’ market is held where families and friends can browse amongst the stalls and buy a range of fine artisan breads, meats, cheeses and other delicacies before relaxing on the sunny lawns with a glass of Laborie’s award-winning wines. The historic Anglo-Boer War monument is situated on the farm and there are regular trail running competitions around the vineyards. Music evenings and other events take place throughout the year culminating in the Carols by Candlelight festival on 9th December. Laborie – where yesterday and today meet.
