Award-winning cellarmaster, Edmund Terblanche, believes that the first priority in winemaking is to make the most of what the grape offers naturally. Individual care is taken with the hand-selection of berries and well-considered barrel maturation.
2011 La Motte Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc
Origin
This is a 100% Sauvignon
Blanc wine, is made from organically grown grapes, made from the eighth production of grapes from one vineyard close
to the town of Bot River in the Walker Bay area. The slope faces south-west and
is situated about ten kilometres from the ocean.
Cellarmaster’s impressions
Due to dry conditions, the
grapes were picked early, resulting in a low alcohol content. The nose shows
characteristic gooseberry and green apple, as well as tropical fruit with hints
of tomato bush. The palate is crispy dry with a firm acid and fresh finish.
Connoisseur’s choice
A refreshing aperitif
wine, perfect with salads, sea-foods, sea-food pasta and spicy foods such as
Chinese and Thai dishes.
2009 La Motte Shiraz
Origin
This wine was
produced from grapes originating from vineyards in various regions in the Cape
wine lands – Swartland
(30%), Walker Bay (20%), Franschhoek (20%), Elim (15%), Paarl (10%) and
Stellenbosch (5%).
Cellarmaster’s impressions
The wine shows an intense spicy nose with aniseed, clove and black
pepper surrounded by black cherry and blue berry fruit. Some liquorice and
toffee notes are present. The palate is full-bodied, chewy and juicy, with
integrated wood tannin that creates a pleasant clean, dry finish.
Connoisseur’s
choice
A spicy number with plenty of rustic, chunky fruit and an
appetizing depth of flavours and complexity. Excellent with a hearty winter
stew.
2009 La Motte Pierneef Shiraz · Viognier
Origin
This wine is a
blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Viognier. The Shiraz component is from Bot River in
the Walker Bay region (70%) and Franschhoek (20%), while the Viognier (10%)
originates from Franschhoek.
Cellarmaster’s
impressions
Good colour
and tight, concentrated tannins from the Walker Bay area are combined with the
elegant juicy wine from Franschhoek, to produce a wine full of flavour and
complexity. The nose reflects black cherry and cranberry fruit, with liquorice
and white pepper spice. The splash of Viognier contributes to the flavour with
rose petal perfume. The firm tannins in the young wine promise a good reward
should the wine be matured for between six and ten years.
Connoisseur’s
choice
Elegant Rhone-style wine with a refined and delicate aromatic nose giving way to smooth, soft dark fruit, well-integrated, supportive tannins and a firm finish.
La Motte Hanneli R – 2007
Origin
This wine is a
blend of 81% Shiraz, 10% Grenache and 9% Mouverde. The Shiraz originates from
the Walker Bay region and Elim and the Grenache and Mouverde from Darling.
Cellarmaster’s
impressions
The
combination of a good vintage and 48 months of wood maturation has produced a
wine with exceptional depth, complexity and personality. The intensely distinctive
nose shows rose petal perfume with black
berry and mulberry fruit, as well as cinnamon and black pepper spice. On the
palate there are powdery tannins, surrounded by a fleshy fullness and lingering
minerally freshness. Enjoyed at its best between eight and twelve years after
vintage.
Connoisseur’s
choice
The crème de la crème! This has had the best of everything – and it shows. Lavish black fruit, intense savoury mid-palate and an endless finish all adding up to one of the most elegant and classy wines around.
