21 May 2015 –

Possibly the world’s most well known doughnuts, Krispy Kremes, will be coming to South Africa soon.

The world’s most famous doughnut brand, featured in sitcoms such as Will & Grace and sold in stores like Harrods, is a world wide phenomenon and the sweet treats are bound to take South Africa by storm. Best known for their Original Glazed doughnut they also famously offer assorted doughnuts in their iconic branded boxes.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts have come a long way since the first batch were sold out of a small building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1937.

The famous Krispy Kreme “hot light” was developed in 1992. This is basically a light in the window that goes on to let customers know that there are FRESH, HOT doughnuts available for purchase.

Our food editor, Tessa Purdon visited the very first Krispy Kreme retail store in High Point Road, Greensboro, North Carolina and says they are like nothing you’ve ever tasted!

Krispy Kreme says it has signed a development agreement with KK Doughnuts SA, to open 31 shops in South Africa over the next five years.

“From Asia to the Middle East to now Africa, the global demand for Krispy Kreme and its signature sweet treats continues to grow,” said Dan Beem, Krispy Kreme’s Senior Vice President and President – International.

“We’ve partnered with outstanding operators who have vast experience in foodservice throughout South Africa. We’re confident Krispy Kreme will establish itself as the country’s premiere sweet treats provider under their leadership.”
