When it comes to breakfast cereal, most of us will automatically think of Kellogg’s! The Kellogg Company has truly stood the test of time and has been doing business as Kellogg’s for the past 117 years.
Not only do they dominate the cereal sector, but they were also the first company in the food industry to hire a dietitian before bringing their journey to South Africa in 1923. Which means that Kellogg’s turns 100 in South Africa this year, and we’re all for any excuse to celebrate!
So naturally, we took to the cereal aisles and put together an epic taste test to celebrate. We decided to see how Kellogg’s Corn Flakes compare to other brands easily available at retail stores across South Africa.
First off, without even getting into the actual tasting, the most obvious difference between Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and other retail brands is the price tag.
Kellogg’s Corn Flakes are significantly more expensive when compared to the supermarkets’ own versions and with ever-rising food costs, we set out to see if it is worth spending the extra money on Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.
Results
After tallying up the results, it will come as no surprise that the supermarkets’ own brands and other brand competitors failed to beat Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, and even though the competition was extremely close, in celebration of Kellogg’s 100th birthday, we can wholeheartedly say that Kellogg’s reigns supreme in the corn flakes category!
We were also able to see what the next best corn flakes option is if your budget doesn’t allow for the original toasted corn flakes splurge.
1. Kellogg’s Corn Flakes
The sample from Kellogg’s appeared to be slightly thicker and was more golden in appearance than the other samples, but most importantly, tasters loved the moreish toasted corn flavour that the sample delivered and deemed the crunch factor as perfection, pushing Kellogg’s into the lead for this taste test.
Comments tasters left: “I love the crunch factor here and also the flavour is good,” and “I like the flavour of this one: it has a really nice ‘corny’ flavour,” and “Tastes nice and toasted. Good crunch to it too. Really enjoyed this sample, I’d rate this one as Kellogg’s???”

2. Bokomo Corn Flakes
Some tasters were happy with the flavour this sample delivered, while others found it to be bland and unappealing, but even though this divided the tasting team somewhat, Bokomo’s corn flakes still managed to clinch second place.
Tasters who were in favour of this sample’s flavour scored it highly, with some picking this sample to be Kellogg’s in the blind taste test, noting: “I think this is Kellogg’s Corn Flakes,” and “This tastes deliciously familiar.”
While this sample is only slightly cheaper than the original Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, it is the sample the tasting team found to be quite similar to Kellogg’s.
Tasters who were less fond of the sample noted things like: “Meh… this sample lacks flavour, texture and colour. I wouldn’t be disappointed if I bought this brand on its own, but it doesn’t really compare to the other samples,” and “Honestly tasted like cardboard with a slight corny aftertaste.”

3. No Name Corn Flakes
Tasters noted that this sample’s corn flakes were quite thin and pale in comparison to other samples, but what stood out the most was that tasters found this sample to be slightly sweeter. Some tasters found that the sweetness overpowered the corn flavour, while others found the sweetness to be quite favourable.
Comments some tasters left: “That tasted familiar and had a nicer sweetness,” and “Also not a good one. It’s too sweet – the sweetness overrides the corn flavour. It’s also too thin and yet not crunchy enough,” and “Great flavour! There’s a slight sweetness in this sample which I quite like. It makes the flakes more palatable. Crunch is on point too!!”
Even though some of the tasters found this sample to be sweeter than the other samples, it certainly is a good option to look at if you’re shopping on a budget!
4. SPAR Corn Flakes
While tasters couldn’t fault the sample’s crispness or crunch or golden appearance, tasters found the sample to be bland on the flavour front.
Comments tasters left: “Good crunch, but lacks flavour,” and “Perfectly crisp and golden but tastes a bit bland,” and “Wonderfully crispy but no flavour sadly.”

5. Morning Mills Corn Flakes
Tasters noted that this sample was satisfying crisp and had a good crunch to it, but sadly found it to be more reminiscent of popcorn than toasted corn flakes.
Comments tasters left: “Popcorn?” and “Tastes a bit like popcorn. Really quite delicious,” and “It tastes like burnt popcorn. 😭”
Cost: R44.99 for 750g
6. Checkers Housebrand Corn Flakes
Tasters unfortunately found this sample to be bland and felt that it lacked flavour. Overall the sample was a bit underwhelming.
Comments tasters left: “Very bland and tasteless,” and “No flavour and a bit underwhelming all round. Not the one for me!”
